Interview with Hydrangea Home - our guest blogger

You can meet some amazing people through blogging. I stumbled across Dawn’s blog, Hydrangea Home when I was searching for some ideas for my party favors. I discovered Hydrangea Home and Dawn. I contacted Dawn and asked if she can make pretty paper cones that I found on her blog. She was happy to make them even though I was already on a tight deadline.

Every detail was perfect from the embossed paper to the red roses which was the theme of the christening. Dawn added that special touch by hand delivering the favors. It is those touches, those details that can make a business successful. Make a business stand out.

We proudly Introduce this weeks guest blogger:

Hydrangea home is a small business on Long Island specializing in handmade home decor, art/photography, hand painted furniture and beautiful unique items for the home.

What made you get into Annie Sloan paint?
I painted furniture many years ago and was looking to get back into it but wanted to achieve old world finishes. I was researching milk paint when I came across the Annie Sloan line of paints which had been around for many years in Europe but was new to the US. I bought a couple of cans and I was hooked!

Dawn did an amazing job, refinishing my vintage furniture

What is your favorite Annie Sloan paint color?
I don't know if I can choose one favorite! But I do love the French Linen - it was the exact color of the moldings and doors in the house we rented during our trip to France.  Her Duck Egg Blue, Provence, Versailles, Old White, Paris Grey and Graphite are also my standard favorites. They are so true to the colors found all over doors, trims and shutters in France.

How is chalk paint different than milk paint?
I have not yet tried milk paint but I can tell you that it comes in a powder to be mixed with water and works beautifully as a paint/stain over unfinished wood. When painted over a previously finished piece of furniture, a natural chipping process can occur but is not as easily controlled as with chalk paint. I will give it a try one of these days! But for now I do love the finishes I can achieve with the chalk paint line. It's very easy to distress and create great patinas with Annie Sloan's paints and waxes.

Thank you Dawn, for helping with this past holiday handmade decor

Would you ever consider teaching a class? You are so talented.
I have considered teaching but it's not in the immediate future unless I can create longer days!

Tell us a bit about your store and the wonderful items you make.
My online shop is filled with a little bit of everything I love. Our biggest sellers are our handmade wood boxes and trays which have distressed chalk paint finishes. They are a popular item for home and event decorating.  I also really enjoy creating vintage style signs with french typography. Some of my other passions are creating preserved floral arrangements, art and photography and due to my habit of collecting, I have become a supplier of some gorgeous ribbons as well.

Your a working stay at home mom. How do you juggle it all?
That's a tough one that I've been working on for a long time (19 years)!  We are a family of six with a very busy color coded calendar. Now that the kids are getting older, they help out a bit more around the house. Cooking, cleaning, laundry, driving is shared by all. We manage to have healthy home made meals, and I get to make it to almost all of the kids' sporting and school events. However, that does mean working all kinds of crazy hours, early morning, late night and weekends. I am not really able to keep a set schedule due to all of the events but I wouldn't want it any other way. When you love what you do, it's not really work!

Salvaged Furniture

Each is made to order and no two will look alike.

The pieces are naturally rustic and the distress of each piece varies.

All of us at Lavender Fields are proud to present our salvaged wood furniture pieces.
We carry reclaimed wood beds, desks, tables, benches, storage units, dressers and much more. We offer the best prices for these unique interior designer favorites.

Plymouth Pine Shelving Unit

Our reclaimed pine floor joists are salvaged from a dairy barn Plymouth WI. The unique finish is due to years of lime-wash treatments that lighten the wood naturally over time.

Chevron Bed
Originally inspired by our reclaimed Chevron and Herringbone flooring patterns, we’ve combined our rough and smooth pines into an unconventional Chevron headboard. Reclaimed varnished bleachers narrowly frame the bed and provide a slight nod to seventies.

Modular Crate Shelving

Crates of all sizes are assembled from graying barn boards into this functional and quirky storage unit. Shelves adjust naturally by fitting smoothly into the slatted crates. Locally sourced steel base and casters add versatility and industrial charm.

Antique Pine Farm Bench

Our farmhouse benches are made entirely from rustic, reclaimed pine, salvaged from barns throughout the Midwest. The tongue-and-groove plank top and primitive leg are modeled after simple farmhouse benches found in the south of France.

Maple Slab Console

This console is comprised entirely of four maple slabs from a suspended factory floor system. The original steel rods that hold each slab together are visible on the ends.

Antique Pine Bed

This bed features antique pine salvaged from floor-joist material used in turn-of-the-century barns throughout the Midwest. The masculine character of the wood is contrasted by a simple French cut.

Sliding Barn Door Wall Unit

Our inventory of reclaimed barn doors and sliding factory doors inspired us to create our own sliding barn door media and/or storage cabinet. Industrial steel tracks and roller systems allow doors to glide smoothly and effortlessly. The doors themselves are made from reclaimed bar siding and the cabinet is trimmed with reclaimed pine floor joist material.

Pecan Factory Slab Table

A single slab of Pecan factory flooring gives unique character to this chunky, yet petite table. The original steel rods that hold the slab together are visible on each end. The steel hairpin legs are in a natural finish.

Painted Antique Pine Farmhouse Table

Each table features reclaimed pine salvaged from barns throughout Midwest. The tops are constructed from floor joists, while the 4"x4" reclaimed timber legs anchor each piece. Custom sizes are also available.

New Years Eve Tables, Party Ideas and Resolutions.

Balloon Drop

Aside from the part where you have to blow up enough balloons to nearly pass right out, this is the perfect celebration element for a New Year’s party. I thought these instructions were the best I found. Of course, you can always go with the ready made kits like the one pictured above, which is for sale at Target or any number of other retailers this time of year.
These are a few of my favorite ideas for enjoying my kid’s school break. Maybe we won’t do all of them, but doing just a couple of them will make great memories for our friends and us.

Confetti Cake

Because cake is how you know it’s a party (and any gathering without a cake is just a meeting), confetti cake – or piñata cake – is the way to go for a New Year’s bash. I think it would be fun to paint a big “12:00” or “2014” on it with icing!

DIY Photo Booth

EVERYONE has a phone/ camera phone these days. And we love taking photos. Surf the web for fun ideas to DIY a photo booth at home. You need only a small designated space. Then do something as simple as running streamers from the ceiling and provide a basket with printable photo booth props.

Each January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later, a 2002 study found.

It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you've swept up the confetti, but it's not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Here’s to your health!

Most popular new year's resolutions, but most important is stay true always.
Lose Weight
Volunteer to Help Others
Quit Smoking
Get a Better Education
Get a Better Job
