Shop Updates and News! Spring Edition

Whether you're new to Lavender Fields or have been with us since the very beginning, we wanted to take a moment to introduce ourselves and share some exciting updates. We are grateful for our loyal customers who have supported us over the years, and we’re equally thrilled to welcome new faces to our store.

We are thrilled to share a little bit about our journey and what makes Lavender Fields. a unique place to shop, visit, and support. Our family-owned lifestyle store has been proudly serving Port Jefferson Village since 2001. Operated by a mother-daughter team, our store offers a curated selection of top-quality bedding, furniture, home décor, candles, and gifts. Our goal has always been to bring joy and comfort into the homes of our customers through the best in design and craftsmanship.

In addition to our original store, we are excited to announce that we’ve expanded into the lower level of our space, now showcasing a collection of vintage finds. This expansion is inspired by our very first store, Kitch and Kaboodle, and we’re eager to continue growing this area with unique treasures that bring personality and charm to your home.

We are also thrilled to that Ava Rose, now 16, has taken on a new role in the village! She’s been giving historic walking tours of Port Jefferson, sharing her knowledge and love of the community’s rich history with visitors. We couldn’t be more proud of her achievements and passion for our town. If you are local and would like to take a tour with Ava contact us.

On top of our retail endeavors, we are passionate about supporting the local community. As part of our ongoing commitment to the well-being of Port Jefferson, we work with local cat rescues and participate in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) efforts to help control the stray cat population. This past fall alone, we were able to catch and fix 28 cats, a cause that’s very close to our hearts. Ava has also been designing bracelets to raise money for local cat rescues and to feed the feral cats of Port Jefferson.

Our business has always been built on a foundation of family, community, and a love for beautiful things. Whether you're shopping for a special gift, seeking design inspiration, or exploring Port Jefferson’s history with Ava Rose, we’d love for you to be part of our continued journey.

Thank you for supporting Lavender Fields and our mission to enrich the lives of those around us. We look forward to seeing you soon in the store or around town!

Warm regards,

Lori and Ava Rose

The Power of Moody Palettes: Creating Drama in Your Home

When it comes to designing the interiors of your home, color plays a pivotal role in setting the mood and atmosphere of a space. While light, airy palettes and neutral tones have their time and place, sometimes it’s the darker, more intense colors that bring the most depth and character to a room. This is where moody palettes come into play—those rich, deep hues that evoke a sense of drama and intrigue.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the power of moody palettes and how you can incorporate them into your home to create a striking, dynamic environment.

Cinnamon Slate 2113-40 is Benjamin Moore's Color of the Year for 2025. It's a mix of velvety brown and heathered plum that's meant to be a modern take on a classic color

What is a Moody Palette?

A moody palette is characterized by deep, dark tones—think rich charcoals, inky blues, forest greens, and burgundy reds. These colors often have a slightly subdued or muted quality, creating a more intimate, sophisticated atmosphere. When used effectively, moody hues can turn a space from bland to breathtaking, adding layers of complexity and emotional depth.

The Benefits of Using Moody Colors

  1. Creates a Sense of Intimacy
Moody colors naturally have a cocoon-like effect, making them ideal for creating cozy, intimate spaces. Darker hues can help draw the walls inward, giving rooms a sense of warmth and closeness. This makes them perfect for areas like bedrooms, living rooms, or reading nooks where you want to feel relaxed and enveloped.

  2. Adds Drama and Visual Interest
One of the most compelling reasons to use moody tones is their ability to inject drama into your home. These colors stand out without overwhelming a space, creating an atmosphere that is both captivating and subtle. Whether it’s a bold navy accent wall or a rich emerald sofa, the use of deep colors can become a statement piece in any room.

  3. Embraces Versatility
While moody tones may seem limiting, they are incredibly versatile. A deep, moody palette can complement a wide range of design styles—from classic to contemporary. In fact, dark colors often act as a neutral backdrop, allowing you to experiment with various textures and materials, from velvet cushions to sleek metallic finishes.

  4. Heightens Contrast and Layering
Moody colors work beautifully when paired with lighter shades or contrasting accents. The interplay between dark and light tones can enhance the overall visual depth of a room, making it appear more dynamic and layered. For instance, a deep charcoal wall contrasted with light wood furniture or white trim creates a stunning contrast that feels fresh yet timeless.

How to Incorporate Moody Palettes into Your Home

  1. Start Small with Accents
If you’re unsure about committing to a full moody palette, begin by introducing dark tones in small doses. Consider incorporating moody colors through accent walls, throw pillows, rugs, or curtains. This allows you to experiment with the mood without overwhelming the space.

  2. Layer with Textures
Moody colors become even more captivating when combined with different textures. Think dark leather chairs, velvet cushions, and matte finishes on walls. The tactile quality of these materials complements the richness of the palette, adding depth and interest to the room.

  3. Use Lighting to Your Advantage
Lighting is key when working with moody colors. Since darker tones can sometimes make a space feel smaller or dimmer, it’s essential to balance them with proper lighting. Use warm, ambient lighting or statement light fixtures to bring out the richness of your chosen palette. Consider dimmable options or accent lighting to create different moods depending on the time of day.

  4. Create Focal Points
When using dark hues, it’s important to create focal points that anchor the room. This could be a statement piece of furniture, a large piece of artwork, or even a feature wall. These focal points help balance the intensity of the palette, ensuring that the space feels cohesive rather than overly dark or heavy.

  5. Consider the Room’s Purpose
Certain rooms lend themselves more naturally to moody colors than others. Living rooms, libraries, or dining rooms, for example, can benefit from the depth and sophistication that dark tones provide. On the other hand, spaces like kitchens or bathrooms might benefit from a lighter touch or a carefully chosen moody accent that doesn't overwhelm the space.

Popular Moody Color Combinations

  • Deep Charcoal + Warm Brass
The contrast of dark gray with rich, metallic accents creates an elegant, modern look. Brass fixtures or gold tones can really pop against a moody charcoal backdrop, creating a striking yet balanced atmosphere.

  • Navy Blue + Muted Pink
This pairing of deep blue with a soft, dusty rose or blush pink creates a harmonious contrast, blending masculinity and femininity in a sophisticated way. It works particularly well in bedrooms or living areas where a touch of romance is desired.

  • Forest Green + Wood Tones
The organic quality of forest green pairs beautifully with natural wood elements, like oak or walnut. This earthy combination is ideal for creating a calm, grounded environment in spaces like home offices or kitchens.

  • Plum + Gold
For a luxurious and bold aesthetic, combine rich plum with gold accents. This pairing creates an opulent, dramatic effect without feeling overwhelming, making it perfect for dining rooms or statement areas.

The power of moody palettes lies in their ability to create spaces that are both dramatic and inviting. These dark, rich hues have the potential to transform any room into a stunning environment, offering emotional depth and visual intrigue. Whether you choose to use them sparingly or go all-in with a full moody makeover, embracing these colors can help you craft a home that feels uniquely your own—a place that exudes personality, sophistication, and undeniable charm.

This warm, earthy hue creates an inviting and sophisticated atmosphere, offering a perfect balance between neutral tones and rich, comforting warmth. Mocha Mousse is Pantone's Color of the Year for 2025.

Why Mocha Mousse?

Mocha Mousse is the perfect balance between earthy browns and subtle neutrals, offering a sense of grounded luxury. It’s warm without being overwhelming and neutral enough to pair with a variety of color palettes, making it an ideal choice for both contemporary and classic interiors.

  1. Versatility in Design
Whether you're creating a modern minimalist space or a cozy traditional living room, Mocha Mousse has the ability to adapt. Its neutral yet rich tone can seamlessly blend into both bold and understated designs. For example, it pairs beautifully with natural wood finishes, creating a harmonious atmosphere that evokes feelings of comfort and relaxation.

  2. A Warm, Inviting Atmosphere
Mocha Mousse is the embodiment of warmth. It’s a color that invites you to unwind and feel at home. Use it in living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens to create spaces that encourage connection and relaxation. Whether as an accent wall or a full-room treatment, this color has a subtle power to transform the mood of a space.

  3. Timeless Elegance
One of the standout qualities of Mocha Mousse is its timeless nature. While many trendy colors come and go, Mocha Mousse has staying power. Its classic, sophisticated appeal means it won’t feel out of place even in five or ten years. This makes it a wise choice for spaces where longevity is key, such as dining rooms, entryways, or office spaces.

  4. Easy to Mix and Match
The beauty of Mocha Mousse lies in how it can serve as a neutral backdrop for a variety of accent colors. Pair it with soft pastels for a light and airy feel, or bold hues like navy, emerald green, or deep mustard for a more dramatic and contemporary vibe. Metallics such as gold, bronze, or copper also work beautifully with Mocha Mousse, adding a touch of glamour to the space.

How to Use Mocha Mousse in Your Home

If you’re looking to bring this luxurious shade into your home, here are a few ideas on how to do so:

1. Accent Walls

Mocha Mousse works wonderfully as an accent wall in living rooms or bedrooms. Its rich tone adds depth to the room without overpowering the space. Pair it with lighter furnishings or textured fabrics to create a balanced look.

2. Furniture and Upholstery

Consider incorporating Mocha Mousse into your furniture choices. A mocha-colored sofa or armchair can become the focal point of your living room, adding a sense of coziness and warmth. For a more subtle approach, try upholstered chairs or ottomans in Mocha Mousse to introduce the color in a less dominant way.

3. Rugs and Curtains

Rugs and curtains in Mocha Mousse can help anchor the space while contributing to the room’s overall aesthetic. Choose soft, natural fibers like wool or linen for a tactile element that complements the earthy tone of the color.

4. Cabinets and Wall Panels

In kitchens and bathrooms, Mocha Mousse can be used for cabinetry or wall panels, adding a sense of refinement and relaxation. This works especially well in spaces where you want a slightly more mature and grounded vibe, without leaning too heavily on darker, more intense colors.

5. Accent Pieces and Decor

If you're hesitant to commit to a large swath of Mocha Mousse, try introducing it through decor items. Throw pillows, vases, lamps, and even artwork can all introduce this color in ways that are easy to switch out as trends evolve.

The Emotional Impact of Mocha Mousse

Color plays a significant role in how we feel in a space, and Mocha Mousse is no exception. This shade exudes warmth and comfort, making it ideal for spaces meant to foster relaxation and connection. It creates a sense of grounding, helping to reduce stress and promote well-being, making it an excellent choice for bedrooms and living rooms where you spend time unwinding.

At the same time, Mocha Mousse has an understated elegance that gives it an air of sophistication, making it suitable for professional spaces or places where you want to feel productive and focused, like home offices or libraries.

So, go ahead, indulge in the warmth of Mocha Mousse and transform your space into a haven of comfort and style.

Set a Stunning Table This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time of celebration, togetherness, and gratitude. One of the most delightful ways to enhance this festive spirit is by setting a stunning holiday table that reflects the warmth and joy of the season. Whether you’re preparing for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah, a beautifully arranged table can create an inviting atmosphere for your loved ones. Here’s how to create a beautiful holiday dining experience.

1. Choose a Theme

Before you start setting your table, decide on a theme that resonates with the holiday you’re celebrating. Each holiday has its unique symbols and colors:

  • Thanksgiving: Warm autumn tones like oranges, browns, and golds.
  • Christmas: Classic reds and greens, or a more modern palette of whites and metallics.
  • Hanukkah: Deep blues and silvers, with touches of white.

Your theme will guide your choice of tableware, linens, and decorations.

2. Select the Right Tableware

Plates and Utensils

Choose dinnerware that complements your theme. For Thanksgiving, rustic or earthy dishes can add warmth. For Christmas, elegant china or festive-patterned plates can create a joyful atmosphere. For Hanukkah, consider blue or silver dinnerware for a contemporary touch.

Glassware

Coordinate your glassware with your tableware. Consider using different styles for water, wine, and any festive cocktails. For Hanukkah, consider using glass menorahs as centerpieces or accents.

Linens

Tablecloths and napkins are key to setting the mood. A crisp white tablecloth can provide a clean slate for colorful accents. For a cozier feel, a textured or patterned table runner can add depth and interest.

3. Create a Centerpiece

Your centerpiece is the focal point of your table and can set the tone for the entire meal. Here are some ideas:

  • Thanksgiving: A cornucopia filled with seasonal fruits and vegetables, or a beautiful arrangement of fall flowers like chrysanthemums and sunflowers.
  • Christmas: A traditional evergreen garland with pinecones and ornaments, or a cluster of candles of varying heights for a warm glow.
  • Hanukkah: A menorah at the center, surrounded by blue and silver accents, or a display of dreidels and gelt for a playful touch.

4. Add Personal Touches

Incorporate elements that reflect your personal style or family traditions:

  • Place Cards: Handwritten place cards can add a personal touch. Consider using leaves or ornaments as holders.
  • Family Heirlooms: Use cherished items like vintage silverware or decorative plates to bring nostalgia to the table.
  • Seasonal Touches: Add pine branches, cranberries, or pomegranates to your decor to infuse the table with seasonal flair.

5. Lighting is Key

The right lighting can transform your holiday table from ordinary to extraordinary:

  • Candles: Use an array of candles in different heights to create a warm and inviting glow. Consider scented candles for added ambiance.
  • String Lights: For a festive touch, weave string lights through your centerpiece or along the table’s edge.
  • Dim Lighting: If possible, dim your overhead lights to create a cozy atmosphere that encourages relaxation and connection.

6. Incorporate Holiday Flavors

Let the flavors of the season inspire your table setting:

  • Edible Centerpieces: Consider using seasonal fruits, nuts, or baked goods as part of your decor. A pie or a loaf of challah can add both beauty and flavor to your table.
  • Themed Favors: Small jars of homemade preserves, holiday cookies, or spice blends can serve as thoughtful favors for your guests.

7. Set the Mood with Music

Finally, don’t forget about the soundtrack to your gathering. Curate a playlist of festive tunes that reflect the spirit of your holiday. Soft background music can enhance the atmosphere and create a sense of joy and celebration.

5 Ways to Cozy Up Your Space This Fall

As the crisp fall air settles in and the leaves begin their colorful dance to the ground, it’s the perfect time to transform your space into a cozy haven. Fall is all about embracing warmth and comfort, and there’s no better way to do that than by incorporating some seasonal touches into your home. Here are five simple yet effective ways to create a snug and inviting atmosphere this autumn with candles, throws, bedding, rugs, and decor.

1. Illuminate with Scented Candles

There’s something undeniably comforting about the gentle glow and rich aroma of candles. This fall, opt for scented candles that evoke the season's essence. Think pumpkin spice, cinnamon apple, or cedarwood. Place candles on tables, mantels, or in corners where they can provide a warm, ambient light. For an added touch of coziness, use candle holders that complement your fall decor—perhaps a vintage brass holder or a wooden lantern. The soft light and enticing scents will instantly make your space feel more inviting.

2. Layer Up with Plush Throws

Throws are not just functional; they’re a stylish way to add texture and warmth to your space. Choose throws in fall-inspired colors like deep oranges, rich browns, or muted greens. Chunky knit throws or fleece-lined blankets are perfect for wrapping yourself up on chilly evenings. Drape them over your sofa or armchair, or layer them on the end of your bed. This not only enhances comfort but also adds a pop of seasonal color and style to your room.

3. Upgrade Your Bedding for Fall

Your bedroom should be a retreat of comfort and relaxation. For fall, swap out your lightweight summer bedding for something more substantial. Opt for flannel sheets or a cozy quilt in autumnal hues. Layer your bed with a soft duvet or comforter and add extra pillows for an extra touch of warmth and luxury. Consider using pillowcases and shams with fall-themed patterns or textures, such as plaid or velvet, to create a cohesive and inviting look.

4. Add Warmth with Area Rugs

Area rugs are a fantastic way to add warmth and texture to any room. During fall, opt for rugs with rich, warm tones or patterns that evoke the season. Rugs in deep reds, oranges, or browns can anchor a space and make it feel more grounded. They also add a layer of comfort underfoot, which is especially nice as temperatures drop. Consider layering smaller rugs over larger ones for a cozy, collected look.

5. Enhance Your Decor with Seasonal Touches

Finally, don’t forget the power of decor to set the fall mood. Incorporate seasonal elements such as miniature pumpkins, dried leaves, or autumnal wreaths. Place these items strategically on shelves, tables, or mantels. A beautiful fall-themed centerpiece can instantly make your dining area more inviting. Additionally, consider using fabric or wooden accents with autumnal motifs, such as acorns or pinecones, to enhance the overall ambiance of your home.

Unlocking the Secrets to Growing and Caring for Lavender: Your Essential Guide

Lavender, with its fragrant blooms and myriad uses, is a beloved addition to any garden. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or a novice with a green thumb, cultivating lavender can be a rewarding experience. From its vibrant colors to its soothing aroma, lavender offers both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. In this guide, we'll explore everything you need to know about growing and caring for lavender, ensuring your garden thrives with this versatile plant.

Choosing the Right Variety

Before diving into planting, it's crucial to select the right lavender variety for your climate and purpose. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is a popular choice for its hardiness and lovely scent, while French lavender (Lavandula stoechas) boasts showy blooms and a unique appearance. Spanish lavender (Lavandula dentata) is another option known for its distinctive serrated leaves and strong fragrance. Research the specific requirements of each variety to ensure it will thrive in your garden.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Lavender is a sun-loving plant that thrives in well-drained soil. Choose a location that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily. Lavender prefers slightly alkaline soil with excellent drainage to prevent root rot. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, consider amending it with sand or gravel to improve drainage. Raised beds or containers can also provide a suitable growing environment, especially for gardeners in regions with wetter climates.

Planting Lavender

Spring or fall are the ideal seasons for planting lavender. Start with healthy nursery plants or propagate from cuttings for consistent results. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and gently loosen the roots before planting. Space plants 12-24 inches apart, depending on the variety's mature size. Water deeply immediately after planting and continue to water regularly during the first growing season to help establish strong roots.

Caring for Lavender

Once established, lavender is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from regular care to thrive:

  1. Pruning: Prune lavender lightly after flowering to encourage bushy growth and prevent it from becoming woody. Trim back about one-third of the plant, avoiding cutting into old wood.

  2. Watering: Lavender is drought-tolerant once established but appreciates occasional watering during dry spells, especially in hot climates. Water deeply at the base of the plant rather than overhead to prevent fungal diseases.

  3. Fertilizing: Lavender has modest fertilization needs. Apply a balanced fertilizer sparingly in early spring, or use compost as a natural alternative to enrich the soil.

  4. Winter Care: In colder climates, lavender may benefit from a layer of mulch to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. Avoid heavy mulching directly around the crown of the plant to prevent moisture retention.

Harvesting and Using Lavender

Harvest lavender blooms just as they begin to open for optimal fragrance and flavor. Cut stems in the morning after dew has dried but before the sun is too hot. Bundle stems and hang them upside down in a dry, dark place to dry. Once dried, lavender can be used in a variety of ways, including sachets, potpourri, culinary creations, and essential oils.

Growing and caring for lavender offers both beauty and practicality to any garden. By choosing the right variety, providing ideal growing conditions, and maintaining regular care, you can enjoy a thriving lavender garden that enhances your outdoor space and provides you with aromatic delights throughout the seasons. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced gardener, cultivating lavender is a delightful journey that rewards you with its stunning blooms and versatile uses.
